about

Boubacar Gaye, leader and master djembe player of Ausecuma Beats, has titled this track ‘Tombo’ in dedication to his teacher in Senegal. Speaking of the song and the dedication, Gaye says,

“It’s very important to me to pay respect to my teacher. This song is about friendship but also forgiveness too. He took me when I was 16, he shared his knowledge with me, became a friend and a dad to me at the same time, teaching me how to move through life. Things I am doing now are because that teacher gave it to me.”

Throughout the track, one might be able to subtly notice a sonic representation of the instructing and supportive relationship between a teacher and their student. Rhythmic motifs are introduced and repeated, each time extending and building in complexity; melodic call and response interactions mimic the learning process, one instrument playing and the other copying, before the line breaks out into a solo, imbuing the music with the personality and skill of the individual musician. The support of the band and the return to the catchy main theme reflects the presence of the teacher - always there, guiding, reminding, and encouraging the song along.
